US Issues Travel Warning for Nepal

Tuesday - 25th September 2007

The US State Department on Monday issued a travel warning for Nepal because of worries over violence and acts of terrorism.
"Nepal continues to experience sporadic incidents of terrorism and politically motivated violence in major urban areas," the department said. "American citizens are reminded to remain on high alert." Americans thinking of visiting the south Asian country were urged to get security information before going and to be ready to change travel plans on short notice.
Nepal's Maoists ended their decade-long insurgency last year after protests forced King Gyanendra to end his royal dictatorship and restore democracy. But fighting has killed dozens in the country's south this year as ethnic groups, some armed, have held protests and strikes to demand greater rights for residents of the region.
